In the quest for a better ranking?

SEO is mostly common sense

Does SEO sound scary to you. SEO or search engine optimization is the process by which you optimize your webpage or online entity in such a manner that it receives all the traffic possible from its particular market.

Thought it sounds like a fancy term, understanding it and excelling it depends on just two things, common sense and a lot of reading.

First rule - Do not believe in a general thumb of rule.

There is no such thing as one good SEO strategy that works for everybody. Depending on your niche, a good SEO strategy for you might in fact be the complete opposite of what is considered bad SEO for another niche. Keep your mind open to new strategies and don't settle for conventional methods that are used again and again.

Second Rule - Research what is working

This is one of the biggest factors that could contribute to your success. There is a philosophy called "Invert, always invert". What it means is that you find out what is working first to know how to build your SEO strategy. It will save you a lot of time by putting you on the right path which could take a lot of time to find by trial and error.

But when you invert, keep in mind the first principle about being open to other idea. Do not find out what is working and just blindly copy the idea. Improve on it, see if it is still works by trying out something small to start with before really focusing a lot of time and energy.

Read as much as you can - There is a ton of advice out there. A lot of it is bad but you will find a goldmine now and then. When you do, you will be glad about all the hours you put into your research because it will show you a way to change your ranking overnight or in a very short basis. The important thing to understand is that almost any information you are looking for is out there, you just need to dig it out.

I would recommend that you get a good handle on Google search tactics so you can refine your search. There are plenty of amazing tools for free that you can use to improve your SEO strategy, some of them are below.

  • Google Ad Words Preview Tool - Google it and find this tool. Then plug in your keyword and see what kind of competition you are up against. Knowing how strong your competition is will give you vital information on building an SEO strategy. This should ideally be used before you make your website live but it is a good tool to analyze your competition even if you have already taken your website live.
  • Google Keywords Tool - This is another powerful online tool that will generate keywords for you. It sorts out keywords by the number of searches in a month, the existing advertiser competition and more. You can find low competition keywords in just a matter of minutes with this tool. This is especially great for PPC or pay per click advertising as you want good ROI.
  • SEO Quake - Install this toolbar into your browser. This will then show you various parameters like page rank, alexa rank, backlinks indexed in Google, Yahoo, MSN and so on. This is another great tool for determining the strength of your competition.
Fourth and Golden Rule - Try, Try, Try until you succeed. If you are just starting with SEO, I can almost guarantee you that you will not meet with immediate success. SEO takes at least one or two experiments before you find something that works for you. You could put in a very hard work week and you will be met with 0 results, or even worse, you could actually see your website ranking slip.
If you quit at this point, you have not only given up but you have wasted the valuable time in learning what was wrong. The right thing to do would be avoid the mistakes you made earlier and try out new things until you find something that works.
I would say that not giving up on SEO should be your number one priority to be successful at SEO. Do not also blindly invest in paid SEO from people who will try to implement what works for them on your website. It might not work for you. Only you know exactly what you are trying to sell and you understand your website best. When you try to pass on SEO work to someone else, you can be assured that they will understand only 50% of your business and their SEO quality will be according to that poor understanding.
Think of your website as a coffee shop that you have opened up. Would you pull the shutters down if nobody came in for a day or two. No, you will try to attract customers. It is the same for your website. Do not give up hope for short term benefits.
Also, would you hire a bunch of strangers to bring customers to your coffee shop. Of course not, you again want to be in control of how you attract your customers and how you think they should perceive you as a vendor.
Most of the reasons why people fail with online ventures is because they think it is quick rich schemes. When they see it is not the case, they abandon their websites. While overnight success is possible in certain niches, most online business are just like the physical ones and need some work before they are up and running successfully for you.
Until that happens, do not give up and best of luck with it.
